ARCHIVED Year 3 Blog 2024/25

 Year 3 started a new topic: Les jeux et chansons - Games and songs.we started off by comparing the Farmer in the den to the French version : Le fermier dans son pre. The children learnt the new vocabulary and had a go at singing the song. They then did a matching activity - matching pictures and vocabulary. 

Today the children recapped their learning from last week and then they completed ‘Where in the World’. They then looked at the 4 countries of the United Kingdom and watched them magically split into smaller parts known as counties. Using a letter, the children identified the county and post code of places on the Isle of Wight and then came to the conclusion that the Isle of Wight is a county.  The children continued to build upon their skills using an atlas and its contents page to find the relevant map. Using the map they were able to answer questions about the size of the counties, which were found in the east or west and if any were landlocked. The children are becoming very efficient using an atlas and this is great to see.  Finally, they located different counties in the United Kingdom as well as deciding which country they were found and the compass direction.  Some amazing work today year 3, well done. 

This week was anti-bullying week. Today, Year 3 learned more about bullying and how it can appear online. They had fantastic ideas for what to do if someone is unkind online.

Year 3 have been exploring mechanisms in DT. We have been looking at what a lever is, how they are used in everyday items such as a seesaw, stapler, peg and a pair of scissors. Then we identified which part was the rigid bar and which part was the pivot. We then looked at how linkages are formed and where the pivot was. Children enjoyed making the mechanisms work and identifying where the pivot and lever were located. We will be using this research to plan a moving Christmas card for our friends.  

This week, Year 3 have begun to add and subtract with exchanging. This can be a tricky topic as children learn when to cross 10 and even to cross 100! Year 3 have worked hard using a range of methods and representations to master this.

Today was the first lesson in Geography with Mrs Gregory. The children were introduced to their journey.  Then, they completed a ‘sticky knowledge’ activity from their learning in KS1. Furthermore, they completed a game where they had to guess a country in the world from 4 pictures.  Next, they were introduced to the contents page of an atlas. Here, they identified the page where they could find the countries of Europe. They were then given 10 minutes to look at the map and discuss what they found.  Finally, they labelled some of the countries found in Europe. 

 Today was our first Computing lesson of the year. We talked about what we have remembered from Year 2 and thought about how computers are used in our everyday lives. We thought about the many uses of computers and discussed how to keep ourselves safe online. We then reminded ourselves how to login to our accounts and navigated to Chrome Music Lab. Over the next few weeks, we will be using Scratch to program our own musical instruments! Watch this space...
