Why do people choose to live near volcanoes?

 Are people crazy to live near a volcano? Today, the children identified both positive and negative reasons to live near a volcano. 

There are many islands in the world that are volcanic islands, where people choose to go on holiday.  Some countries, use the heat from the magma and steam to provide their houses with natural heating and hot water. Furthermore, they mine for minerals, gold, lead and sulphur from the magma, 

However, there are some negatives to living near a volcano as when they erupt they can destroy both houses and landscapes as well as mud slides. The ash and volcanic eruptions also stop travel around the world.

On Wednesday, Year 3 had a visitor from the Iron Age! Holly showed us lots of fascinating iron age activities, games and jobs. We learned how to spin and weave wool from a real sheep, how to use a rotary quern to grind corn into flour, how to make pots out of clay and how to play some fun Iron Age games. We even chose Iron Age names for ourselves and learned a little about Iron Age law and order!

Music - Week 1 & 2

 Air - Music Our topic in music this half term is 'Air'. In week one, we explored the musical term 'pitch' and the children listened to a piece of music, identifying some dramatic changes in pitch. This week was week 2 and we explored the musical terminology 'timbre' and 'dynamics'. The children enjoyed exploring different types of percussion instruments and the different sounds that they could create. They composed some short pieces of music, all about a cloud. They performed their compositions and the rest of the class described the mood that they had created through their music, using the new musical vocabulary, timbre and dynamics.
