This week the children completed their assessment in Geography. First, they looked at a map of the Isle of Wight and debated where the best place was to put a city. Using their knowledge of the human and physics, features of a city helped. Some children thought Newport was the obvious place as it is the capital of the Isle of Wight and it is near a river. Others thought Shanklin or Sandown might be a good place as it is near the coast and there would be good transport links as well as places to eat.  The children then drew a city and their features .

Author visit!

Today we were really lucky that Peter J Murray visited us. He talked us all about his 20 anniversary of his original series of ‘Mokee Joe’. He talked us through how and why he became an author; it was surprising that he was actually a maths teacher before he was a author. He then spoke in depth about the characters of Mokee Joe and how he developed them all. The children were so engaged and loved hearing Peter retell some of the Mokee Joe story.

What human and physical geography can we find on a map?

This week, the children started off by recapping their knowledge from the previous lessons. Then, they played, ‘Where in the world?’ Following this, they used aerial photos of cities, including Portsmouth and Southampton (as they have recently been there there with school) to recap human and physical geography. The children were amazing at this. Using their knowledge they were then introduced to Ordnance Survey Maps  and their symbols. The children enjoyed finding the symbols and guessing what they mean. They then used the key to help them find different human and physical features on the Isle of Wight.
