Science - Rocks

In Science we have been learning how to group items according to their physical properties or purpose. The class then applied those skills to grouping rocks according to their physical properties. The children explored the rocks and discussed their appearance, texture and some even had a strong smell! We then grouped the rocks accordingly. We then learnt about how metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks are formed-ask your child if they can remember!

Metamorpic -  rocks that were originally igneous or sedimentary but have been changed b considerable heat and/ or pressure. Examples - gneiss, marble.

Igneous - formed from the cooling and solidification of molten rock. Examples - gabbro, granite.

Sedimentary - these rocks start as sediments carried in rivers and deposited in lakes and oceans. The layers become compressed over time. Examples - sandstone, limestone.

Can your child give you an example of each one?
