PSHE - No Outsiders

Image
This week, Year 3 read the book 'This is Our House!' by Michael Rosen. This is the story of a boy who does not want to share or play with children who are different to him. This helped us to understand a new word: Discrimination. The children were great at spotting this in the story, and they showed brilliant empathy - they were able to explain how the characters in the story would be feeling in response to discrimination. As a class, we talked about how everyone is welcome at Gurnard Primary School! Next, we made posters to display at school, to remind us that we all belong. Excellent learning, well done, Year 3!

Perfecting Place Value!

Image
This week, Year 3 came to the end of their unit of learning all about Place Value. To check our understanding, we completed some short assessments. We noticed that a question using digit cards proved tricky, so we made sure to spend some extra time learning how to use digit cards to make 3-digit numbers! We created our own questions to test each other too! With our deep understanding of place value, we are now ready to move on to addition!

RE Festival Workshop- Sukkot

Image
Today Year 3 had their first RE festival workshop. We looked at the Jewish festival of Sukkot, a celebration that is similar to the Christian Harvest Festival.  First of all we looked at what it was like to be thankful and how we show thanks for the things we have.  We then explored the festival of Sukkot and learnt during the week of Sukkot, some people build sukkah's (outside huts) in their gardens where they spend time with friends and family, eating, praying, playing games and generally being thankful all they have. We also learnt about some of the symbolism of different acts Jewish people perform during this special time, including waving 'The Four Kinds'.  We then had a go at decorating a picture of a sukkah with all the things we are thankful for. It was interesting to hear what the children were grateful for.  Well done to Jaxson for making a model sukkah remembering the all important leaves and twigs for the roof.

English Week 5

English  This week we were very lucky to have an author come in to talk to year 3 and deliver a workshop on how to create the most exciting ideas for story writing. Zorah Nabi, writer of 'The Kingdom Beyond The Sea' and 'The City Beyond the Stars', offered a very interactive workshop and it was an exciting opportunity for the children to work together to collaborate on some creative ideas for a new story book. Some of the children left the workshop feeling extremely inspired and wanted to go away and write a story based on the idea they had come up with. The children really enjoyed this amazing opportunity to speak to a published author and they even left having had a sneak peak of the cover for Zorah's new book coming out in 2026!

Still life drawing with charcoal

In today's art lesson, Year 3 drew three items that were presented at the front. We spoke about the contrast between light and dark, applying varying amounts of pressure to show this on our paper, and how we can use charcoal to create different marks. Some of the results were fantastic!

English Week 4

Image
English Week 4 This week, we have waved goodbye to our first topic, 'The Barnabus Project'. The children finished the unit by writing some fantastic descriptions of what Barnabus and his friends see when they escape to the above-ground world. Year three have shown us that they can use rich and powerful vocabulary to describe, as well as interesting adverbs to modify their verbs. Their writing has been nothing short of exciting to read. Please see some examples below...

European Day of Languages

Image
Each year the European day of Languages is celebrated on 26th September. Year 3 found out about German culture, food and some facts about Germany. They also located Germany on a map of Europe and had a go at pronouncing some greetings and counting in German. They then created a visual fact file of everything that they had found out.
