How are humans threatening the rainforest?

Image
During their lesson, the children watched a clip about the rainforest to identify five different ways humans are damaging the rainforest. First, they identified that deforestation means cutting down the trees, this can be done for many reasons. They then debated why man would cut down trees. Some amazing ideas were discussed but they finally agreed on five: mining, growing crops, feeding cattle, chopping down trees for wood as well as making paper.

RE Festival Workshop- Humanism Day

Image
In our RE workshop today we learnt about the worldview of Humanism and its annual festival of World Humanism Day. Humanists are people that believe they do not need religion to help them live good and happy lives and turn to science for answers. They don't believe in any God, have a religious book or sacred place, consequently there are no set ways in which to mark special occasions or even World Humanist Day itself. There may be events like picnics, conferences, parties or even protests to mark the day but it would depend on each cultures preference.  To mark this day and as a reflection of all the festivals we have already learnt about this year, we worked in teams to design our own perfect celebration, thinking about the food, venue, activities, decorations and clothes we would want.

French: Jacques et les haricot magiques

Image
Year 3 revised vegetable activity and practised pronunciation. They then explained Jack and the beanstalk to their partners before watching a French version of the story. They then practised pronouncing the vocabulary from the story and labelled images from the story.

DT Dips

Image
This week in DT the children tried a selection of dips with tortilla chips and pitta bread. We discussed the ingredients and where in the world they are commonly eaten. We then discussed how the dips tasted, looked and what their texture was like. Children rated the dips out of 10 and we will take a vote what to make as a class at the end of term

Wildheart Animal Sanctuary educational visit

Image
In science this week  Emma from the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary came to visit Y3 today. She told us all about White-tailed eagles, their habitats, adaptations and conservation (by the Roy Dennis Foundation and Forestry England). The childern thoroughly enjoyed the workshop!  After the workshop the children joined in with an island wide art project! They painted White-tailed eagles onto tiles which will form part of a mural exhibited at the Quay Arts Centre. We can let parents know dates closer to the time.

Why is a rainforest important to us?

Image
This week the children looked at why the rainforest is important to us. Some of the children knew that we get oxygen from the trees but the didn’t know that they also take away the carbon dioxide. The rainforest also provides, medicines for us, settlements for indigenous people, lots of animals and insects as well as some of our food. Well done year 3, a fabulous lesson and discussions.

DT Making a dip

Image
In DT Y3 learnt how to be hygienic and safe in the kitchen. They thought about when you should wash your hands, what jobs were appropriate for children in the kitchen, and what jobs should be done by an adult. They then designed a poster to display in the kitchen reminding children to wash their hands, wear an apron and tie back their hair.

Layers of the rainforest

Image
This week, the children have been learning about the 4 layers of the rainforest: Emergent Layer, Canopy, Understory and the Forest Floor. The children acted out how the canopy acts as an umbrella and blocks out the sun to the other layers. The then identified which layers different animals will live in or if they  could live in different layers.
