Why do people choose to live in a city?

Image
This week the children used aerial photos of four cities to recap the different human and physical features. They then shared their own experiences when the had visited cities. For some, they discussed their trip last week to Portsmouth and Southampton.  From there, the children completed a grid which identified jobs, settlements, entertainment. Then they had to identify how all these things could be an advantage or disadvantage when living in a city.

English

English This Week  In our English lessons this week, Year 3 have been learning some new skills to help us with our instruction writing next week.  We started the week looking at fronted adverbials for time. After this, we recapped what we could remember about verbs and focused on a new type of verb - an imperative verb. The children like to know this as a “bossy verb”.  We had a fun and interactive lesson on the mini whiteboards using our new skills to try and build cohesion in our writing. The children helped each other by editing their sentences together.

What is a city?

This week, the children used pictures of different cities to identify their different features. The children then looked at Southampton and Portsmouth as they visited them last week when they went to the Mayflower. Using the vocabulary: settlement and population, the children came up with a definition.  Using their knowledge from their first task, they watched a film to compare the features of Cardiff and Birmingham.

Year 3 have been lucky enough to have visits from some of the sports leaders at St Georges school, who have been kind enough to show them how they use the wheelchairs in their inclusive lessons. They have also been at work honing their indoor athletics skills, even though we’ve been outside in the chilly sunshine.

Computing - Scratch Programming

Image
Today in Computing, Year 3 have been learning how to use Scratch to programme 3 different sprites to move. We had to think carefully about the blocks that we chose and the commands that we gave them. We then explored some new blocks by adding commands and modifying the code.
